Solid Surface Countertops

Solid surface countertops are a great way to add perfection to your kitchen. They are smooth, durable, easy to clean, available in many colors, and water resistant. It gets its name because it is made of solid synthetic sheets that are formed by mixing a mineral compound with polyester and/or acrylic resins. When it’s finished it offers the look of stone, but without color variations. Expect to pay about $70-$150 per square foot.

Many people enjoy solid surface countertops because the pattern or color runs throughout the surface making chips, dents and scratches easily repairable. It also comes in an array of colors and finishes and can be molded into a single seamless piece. Unfortunately, it is easily discolored by heat and heavy impacts, as well as being quite expensive. Also, it could potentially crack after cooling down from a hot pot or pan touching its surface.

When it comes to cleaning solid surface countertops, pay attention to the manufactures instructions. Common manufacturers include DuPont Corian and Avonite. In most cases, dirt can be removed with soapy water or an ammonia-based cleaner, but it’s always better to check first. You can disinfect the surface with a solution of diluted household bleach (one part water/one part bleach).
